I had a very strange occurrence with a Willy Wagtail bird recently that I think is worth mentioning.
I was in Australia looking after my aged mother who had been ill.
I was staying in the Granny flat in the back yard of the residence. Between the flat and main house is a lush canopy of palms, vines and a large water feature. So there is always a lot of birds and a thriving ecosystem.
The strangeness started after dark one night. I was in the flat with the sliding door open. When in flew a Willy Wagtail bird. It flew around before starting to hop along the furniture high up out of reach. I turned the outside light on and the inside light off, thinking it would fly out again. An hour later it was settled so I closed the door and went to sleep. Next morning I opened the door and it flew out. No harm done.
Two nights later I was inside the flat when it happened again. Only this time the Willy Wagtail seemed to want to interact. It sung and danced just out of my reach. Hopping along my bed and on the back of chair I was sitting in. Chirping and whistling up a storm. I thought this is crazy, I left the door open so it could get out and went up to the house to tell my mother the bird was back.
I had only just started telling her the story when there was a loud thud, followed by two more. The two little dogs where at back glass door barking, I could also see the cat watching the scene.
I opened up glass door to see what was going on in the dark veranda…and in flew the Willy Wagtail! It had been flying into glass door to get inside to me. There where 6 beautiful tail feathers on the ground that I collected 😀
Inside the bird flew up onto a hanging fixture and did not move for the rest of the night. That night and the night before I had slept inside my mothers house to be close to her. The next morning I opened the door, it flew out and I never saw it again. Like I said it was a strange occurrence.
